NaNo Final Stretch

I had yesterday off work, to work on NaNoWriMo.
By 3pm, I'd written 1000 words. This is not good. It was like those days at work where I get nothing done before 12noon, except what I'd done nothing of wasn't work, but my novel. You know, the one I chose to do.

(Instead I started playing the Chromatron series of puzzle games, from the same people who created Lost In The Static. Evilly addictive, puzzles about reflecting light around the place, and combining beams of different colours.)

I was sitting at 41500, looking at the 8500 words remaining, and panicking. I couldn't see any way I was going to divide them up between the remaining days that would end with me anywhere near 50k.

I got more productive in the afternoon (as also happens on those days at work), but I'd still only written 2400 words by the time Rachael got back, at 6:30. I'd decided I'd have to skip WednesdayAnime :(

And then the evening went amazingly. Rachael is so wonderful. She made use of the most magnificent rewards for each further 1000 words I produced, and just her presence beside me was such an encouragement. I really write by far my best when she's beside me.

So by the end of the evening, I'd reached a personal best of 6365 words in one day (albeit one entire day). And Rachael had finished!

Now there just remains for me to (a) write 2956 words, and (b) finish my story. I'm expecting to do the first tonight and the second tomorrow - I think the story will fit into 52k or 53k, but not quite 50k. (It's a lot better than Horizons and Ultimate Dream, my novels from 2005 and 2006, both of which clocked in at around 70k when I finished them...)

So that's the plan. It's slightly hampered by me being stuck at work till 8:45 :(:( I might end up at something like 49k tonight. But as long as I get to 50k and get my story finished by the end of tomorrow, it'll all be worth it. :)

How do you do that? You posted this comment within one minute of me making my post. Do you have an email alert or something? Or do you just live online?

Also, you should so definitely read Ultimate Dream. There are several instances there of people making comments on blog posts consisting of a single smiley :)
(Well, at least one.)

Thank you! I'm writing as I post this!
(Well, erm, obviously I am writing, but not my novel. But I was writing my novel just a moment ago, and will return to it immediately once I'm done... :) )

Lost in static
Wow, that's an amazing idea. I played for, um, about 30 seconds and then couldn't take any more. However, I do remember playing chromatron once, but didn't realise there was more of it, thank you. That's almost the epitome of a puzzle game, you couldn't imagine simpler rules, but it's still really hard to get them all to line up right :)
